A Host Family

Becoming a host family

Have you ever considered hosting a student from a foreign country?  It is an unforgettable experience: one you are sure to treasure for the rest of your life.  Hosting an AFS student/ volunteer/teacher will be a learning journey where the whole family welcome him/her as  a member of your family in every way.

For up to 11 months, he or she goes to school/community project organization in your community, share Indonesian life with you, goes to the movies with the rest of the family, struggles with school, taking part in school extracurricular or outside school activities,  and acts and lives just like a normal teenager– despite the difference in language and culture.

Who can we host?

Every year students, volunteers and teachers are coming to Indonesia to live as a member of your family. There are some participants that your family can host:

  2. Knowing and understanding about other culture through AFS student, so it will help expanding horizons without having to go to that country.
  3. To build an international familial connection among nations
  4. Learn to new and different cultures, customs and religion.
  5. Your family will inevitably become more sensitive to global issues
  6. Getting an informal education for your family – by hosting an AFS student your family will be involved in intercultural communication processes, build understanding and maturation for you son/daughter and also for the AFS student.

Requirement

Some condition to become Host Family:

  1. All family members stated their interests to host an AFS student in their house for a year as part of their family member.
  2. One or both host family candidate preferably above 30 years old.
  3. In the family, there is a 15 – 18 years old son/daughter, of the same age to the hosting student.
  4. Preferably one of family member is able to speak English
  5. The family still hold an Indonesian values and cultures, but open to a different culture or religion
  6. The family is able to provide time, love and a chance to spend time together with the hosting student.
  7. The family has a close family bond, warm and open.

Procedure

The procedure to become a host family:

  1. Contact chapter Bina Antarbudaya in your area to register and give your name, address and phone number.
  2. You will receive a host family application, fill it up and submit to the chapter.
  3. The family will be contacted by the chapter for a family interview
  4. The result of Family interview and the complete application will be sent to the National office
  5. If we find a candidate that match your background, then you will receive a candidate application less than a month before their arrival in Indonesia.
