Bina Antarbudaya/AFS is a volunteer organization, and its services and support are primarily delivered by volunteers, backed up by professional staff. Bina Antarbudaya/AFS volunteers give their time and knowledge, because they believe in the mission. Their personal involvement adds a larger dimension to AFS programs, and the interaction between participants and volunteers enriches the intercultural experience of both. Bina Antarbudaya/AFS is committed to providing appropriate screening, training, support and resources for its volunteers.

The efforts to build future leaders need a lot of direct and indirect volunteers support. Over 35.000 AFS volunteers spread in 50 countries; from young people, adult, male, female, educator, students, college students, experts, retired, housewife etc, they volunteerily give their time, energy and thoughts for noble purpose.

Together with Bina Antarbudaya, the volunteers interact with people from diverse backgrounds. This condition give them a chance to expand their networking, hone skills/knowledge in facing and bridging understanding, communication, leadership skills, develop their own potential and as well as developing other people.

By becoming volunteers, we have a chance to take an active role as an agent of change, in local/chapter level, national and international.

Bina Antarbudaya/AFS, as a truly volunteer-based organization, has always had a strong commitment to the approximately 700 volunteers in Indonesia and more than 35,000 volunteers worldwide.

Helping to bring the people of the world together is exciting, interesting, and rewarding work. For more than 55 years AFS Volunteers in Indonesia and in the world have been building bridges of intercultural understanding and changing the way the world works.

What are Bina Antarbudaya/AFS Volunteers responsible for?
There are many ways you can help Bina Antarbudaya/AFS with your volunteer time. Bina Antarbudaya/AFS volunteers on a local level help coordinate recruitment, selection, placement, preparation and support activities for AFS participants and host families. Volunteers also help with fundraising and volunteer training and development. Local volunteers also arrange various social AFS activities and events. Regional and national volunteers coordinate various activities on a broader scale and some may also serve as members of the Bina Antarbudaya Chapter Organization, Bina Antarbudaya Board in the Bina Antarbudaya organization.

Do I need to speak a second language to become Bina Antarbudaya/AFS Volunteer?
Not necessarily. Volunteers are not required to speak any second language.

Do I need to become an AFS participant or host a participant to become Bina Antarbudaya/AFS Volunteer?
No, as noted above, there are many ways that you can volunteer for Bina Antarbudaya/AFS. You may choose to be part of a local team that helps screen Bina Antarbudaya/AFS applicants, or, you may choose to be a local contact for an AFS participant and his/her host family. Your interests might lead you to be an organizer of social events for the Bina Antarbudaya/AFS group in your home community, or you may have skills which would serve the Bina Antarbudaya Board in your country well. Bina Antarbudaya/AFS welcomes everyone’s talents and desires to serve and learn. We feel that each volunteer opportunity is also a chance for the volunteer to learn and enjoy the AFS experience from another perspective.

How much time do I need to give to Bina Antarbudaya/AFS as a Volunteer?
There is no set requirement for how much time you give Bina Antarbudaya. Some volunteers choose to focus their work on a single activity within their community. A volunteer in the screening process may participate in 3-4 interviews with applicants and help the local committee decide which participants will be forwarded on to the next level of screening. Other volunteers may act as the President of the local AFS group and coordinate activities and meetings all year. AFS welcomes your gifts and commitment at the level you are able to give.
